A loud banging woke Randey. With a start he realized it was the sound of someone pounding on the door. He hadn’t remembered falling asleep, and it took him a few moments to recall where he was. The thumping was repeated and his gaze fell upon the tankard sitting on the table. It must have been the strength of the Dwarves’ ale, he thought. Glancing around he saw that his companions were draped in various poses of awkward repose.

All except Caulan.

The Minotaur stood to one side, looking at Randey with – amusement, was it? He couldn’t tell. He frowned at the tall Shujaar, straightening in his chair as best he could. His head hurt. When the door opened, the creaking sound was preternaturally loud. Or so it seemed. The stout form of Furgus stepped in, a broad smile on his face. “Greetings, Knights!” he said cheerily. Randey felt it was entirely cruel of him to assail them with such good spirits when they were plainly suffering the effects from spirits of a different kind. Still, he nodded in affirmation as he heard Kale and Owin groaning and sitting up as well. Furgus glanced at Caulan. Raising an eyebrow, he said, “You look well, Shujaar. My compliments to you on your stout constitution.”

Caulan simply grunted.

Furgus returned his attention to the trio of Knights. “If you are able, good Knights, Kol has asked that I take you back so that he may speak with you again.”

“Yes,” said Randey, fighting to clear his head. Kale shot him a hard frown, but Randey went on, “We shall be happy to accompany you. Won’t we, Knights?”

Owin’s head was pounding mightily, if his expression was any indication. He managed a nod. He was a trifle wobbly as he stood, but he straightened with as much dignity as he could muster. Kale did the same, and they joined Randey beside the table. Furgus clapped his hands. The Knights winced at the sound, and Randey was even more sure of Furgus’ cruelty. Worse, it appeared that the Minotaur was trying to suppress a bovine smile, and not very successfully.

They followed Furgus through the tunnels and soon arrived back at the council hall where they had first met the clan leader. This time the Dwarves seated around the table were silent, glaring at the party as they entered. Kol’s expression was difficult to read. In part because of his heavy beard, but also because he seemed to be an individual capable of keeping his mood a mystery. Randey bowed respectfully before the assembled Dwarves. “Noble Kol, it is an honor to be in your presence once more.”

One of the other Dwarves let out a snort of derision. Kol ignored it, keeping his eyes on Randey. “Grenyaar value honor very highly, yes?” he said.

“Yes. It is the cornerstone of the Black Knights’ code.”

“That has been my experience,” Kol went on. He glanced at one of his fellows, a dark-haired Dwarf with deep-set eyes, and a scar that cut through his beard on one side.
